Finnair Announces March 2010 Traffic Figures on North Atlantic Route

Michael Maass, Finnair’s Sales Director for North America, announced that Finnair’s scheduled passenger traffic for March 2010 on the North Atlantic route increased by nearly 25% in comparison to March 2009, measured in revenue passenger miles. The national carrier of Finland (www.finnair.com) currently serves JFK with daily non-stop flights to Helsinki.

“We are delighted with this growth, especially since it also reflects a marked increase in business travel from the US via Helsinki to our destinations throughout Europe, Asia, the Baltics and Russia,” notes Maass. “In particular, we find that North American business travelers to Delhi, Seoul and a number of cities in China prefer to fly Finnair and transfer in Helsinki (www.viahelsinki.com). Flying the shortest route to Asia, they can bypass more crowded European airports and possibly take a rejuvenating break at Via Spa (www.finnair.com/spa), the new state-of-the-art spa facility at Helsinki Airport.”

During March 2010, Finnair’s passenger load factor on the North Atlantic route was 85%, an excellent result for this time of year. Says Maass: “Due to our focus on successful capacity management, Finnair’s aircraft are flying fuller than before.”

Company-wide, Finnair traffic overall grew by a modest 2%, mainly because demand for leisure travel has declined by more than 30%. During March 2010, scheduled Finnair flights carried 600,000 passengers, which is 10% more than in March 2009.
