In the past year, not a single graduate of a flight school has been able to find work as a pilot. The Finnish Pilots’ Association says far too many pilots are being trained.

The Pilots’ Association estimates that nearly 200 newly-graduated pilots are out of a job.

“I graduated at the beginning of September and since then I’ve done occasional warehouse work, but I haven’t been able to work as a pilot. When I started my studies I couldn’t even imagine that the situation would be like this when I graduated,” says Jani Heiskanen, who says he’s dreamed of a pilot’s career, since he was a little boy.

The Association is calling for training to be cut, but instructors at the Finnish Aviation Academy in Pori disagree. Instructor Juha Siivonen says that during the last recession, pilot training was cut significantly, and it eventually led to a real shortage of trained pilots.
