The year 2010 hasn’t started very well for the airline business. JAL confirmed the bankruptcy, buyers do exist but the money they have, will it be wasted? As I wrote my cranky post few days ago about Delta and Oneworld to buy JAL, I still have my doubts about that. I strongly believe, it is not successful for the Delta or worse, to Oneworld.
Because this is just all about money, nothing related to passenger’s happiness or anything else, just money, I think this is the time when budget airlines should hit fast and hard. As a side note, is there anything else than budget airlines today? At least the service is the same. However, back to topic. JAL is giving the awesome opportunity to the Ryanair, for example, to expand it’s network. The fact is that they have been eager to get the cross atlantic routes and the Asian routes for a while now. Maybe Ryanair can’t handle all the traffic by itself, there comes another opportunity to budget airlines. The alliance. And I mean big alliance. If the low-cost airlines put up an alliance like Staralliance with all the features like code sharing, etc. it might be a too big hit to the traditional airlines. Well, that is not good either, but it would teach to the big boys how to handle the business. National carriers have been decades in a secure position because of ownership. Those were the times when you didn’t need to worry about the money, just take your check and off we go. As another example I would like to take is my dearest airline, Finnair. When Finland was under Soviet power, back in the 80’s, the management was nothing more than a puppets who’s only job was drinking and having fun. Government gave money every week so the most trusted and the best airline could fly and operate. Now those golden days are gone and Finnair is almost done. Thanks.
What’s the point eh? Well, if you take a look at the figures, big airlines like JAL don’t make these times we are having. And they will not go away. Easyjet will make it along with many others.
Low-cost guys, take all you want, it is cheap now!!!
