Baggage handlers at Helsinki Airport support the suggestion that an outside mediator should be brought in to help resolve the dispute between the Finnish Aviation Union, Finnair, and their new employer Barona.
The suggestion was made by Defence Minister Jyri Häkämies, who is responsible for the supervision of government-owned companies like Finnair. He’s now put the ball in Labour Minister Anni Sinnemäki’s court. She says she has nothing against the idea, but notes that the suggestion should have come from the parties involved in the dispute.
“Perhaps Minister Häkämies has hopes that at this point… that someone else could solve a problem that is partly his responsibility to solve,” she told YLE.
Finnair, for its part, says it won’t oppose an outside mediator, but insists that before this happens, the parties have to agree on exactly what issues are to be mediated.
Finnair sold baggage handling operations to Barona over the employees’ and the union’s objections, which sparked a walkout and caused a mountain of luggage to accumulate at the airport.

Wife & I are traveling to Finland for a two week vacation. We are VERY concerned about not receiving our luggage when we arrive at Helsinki-Vantaa airport. Our flight is from Boston to London to Helsinki.
It all depends the airline you’re travelling from London to Helsinki. Luggage problem seems to be only in Finnair, so if you’re coming with Finnair, then there might be a problem. I suggest you to “cross pack” your things carefully. Other airlines should work just fine. If your luggages somehow isn’t there when you are on the luggage line, don’t worry too much. Put the address where you’re staying in your vacation and they will get them to you. It may be handy if you take some phone numbers with you so you can claim your things to be delivered faster. Check out http://finnair.com for the customer service numbers.
I hope everything goes fine and happy vacation to you.
Ps. It’s freezing here now. Dress well
