The state-owned airport operator Finavia plans to cut back on services by reducing daily opening hours at some airports.
There are 24 airports in addition to Helsinki-Vantaa belonging to the network maintained by Finavia. The company intends to keep some low-passenger volume airports open mainly at hours that will best serve regularly scheduled flights. In addition, some local air traffic services are to be shifted to regional flight traffic information service.
The reduction in services is aimed at cost savings on company operations in the face of dwindling passenger figures. At present, smaller airports are operating at a loss and being subsidized by profits made by the country’s main Helsinki-Vantaa Airport.
Over the past few years, only airports serving more that 300,000 passengers annually have been able to show a profit. In addition to Helsinki-Vantaa, those include the airports serving Oulu, Rovaniemi, Tampere, Turku, Kuopio and Vaasa.
Finavia CEO Samuli Haapasalo says that the current network of will be maintained, but that operations will be modified to meet peak demand at arrival and departure times at smaller airports.
The cutbacks will mainly affect airports that provide feeder traffic into Helsinki-Vantaa. Many of these airports have scheduled early morning and late evening flights, but very few if any flights during other times of the day.
