A decade after the first moves towards its construction were taken, Spain’s first privately-owned airport is about to commence operations. Aeropuerto Central, located 16km from the city of Ciudad Real in southern Spain, represents investment of 800m euros to date and will begin operations on Monday. Regional carrier Air Nostrum will inaugurate the facility, with a flight departing from the new airport for Barcelona.
The aim of the new airport is to end the monopoly of Aena, the Spanish airports and air traffic authority, on airport management in Spain and expand rapidly, becoming a real option for airlines, according to Escolastico Gonzalez, the general manager of the airport. Aeropuerto Central management hope to see between 700,000 and 800,000 passengers use their airport in its first year of operation, with the number to increase to 2.8 million in its fifth year of operation.
